Free typing test

Find out how fast you type. Start the clock, type one passage as cleanly as you can, and the server times you from your first keystroke to your last — words per minute and accuracy, no rounding in your favour.

No sign-up, no download, no ads. Your score goes on the leaderboard like everybody else's, and a guest session keeps it so you can beat it next week.

How the test is scored
  1. A short countdown, then the passage appears — a straight race against the clock.
  2. Words per minute is your correct characters divided by five, per minute.
  3. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes you got right the first time.
  4. The timing is done on the server, so a fast connection buys you nothing.
  5. Passages come from 2836 texts across four difficulties — easy prose through to code and punctuation.
What is a good typing speed?
WPMLevel
under 25Beginner — hunting and pecking
35–45Average — the typical computer user
55–70Proficient — touch typing without looking
75–95Fast — writers and developers
100+Elite — competitive typists

The number matters less than the accuracy behind it. A clean 60 WPM beats a ragged 75 every time, because corrections are what actually slow you down.

Then raise it

Measuring is step one. The drills on the typing speed practice page — accuracy first, weak keys second, speed bursts last — are what move the number. The 31-lesson course teaches the technique if you are still looking down at the keys.

Or make it a race: up to 5 people, one countdown, and a lane filling up behind you is a better reason to hurry than a timer ever is.
